Mount Adir Lookout

Dedication

"We are parents of soldiers who fell defending the homeland in the Second Lebanon War.

We are deeply connected to this land with every fiber of our being.

We have always seen contributing to the state as a central part of our worldview. Our enlistment and the enlistment of our sons in the Israel Defense Forces is a natural continuation of this recognition. For us and our sons, it was clear that military service might place them in situations where they would be required to risk their lives and perhaps even sacrifice themselves. We always hoped that this need would never arise.

In the summer of 2006, during the war, we accompanied our sons to their eternal rest.

This lookout was built in memory of our loved ones with appreciation, love, and endless longing."

******************************

As part of our summer trip to the Western Galilee, Matan and I (a Bar Mitzvah mission...) planned a trip that combines heritage, antiquities, nature, and, of course, attractions.

From our location in Shlomi, we could see the border line high on the mountain from the balcony. It was important to me to find a viewpoint where they could see just how close we really are to Lebanon and connect the reality to the information they learn in school and hear in the news.

This is how we arrived at the "Mount Adir" lookout.

A lookout established as a memorial to the IDF soldiers who fell in the Second Lebanon War.

So Matan, who is soon celebrating his Bar Mitzvah, was in his eighth month in the womb when his father was called in the middle of the night, under emergency orders, to reserve duty. We climbed on foot to the stunning lookout, and from the forest we walked through, the balcony suspended before the open view was revealed to us.

On the railing of the balcony hang plaques telling the story of that war. The names of the fallen are listed. When my eyes caught the next thing, I couldn’t remain indifferent. And I cried... quietly, in my heart. For the amazing parents who raised their child with a great sense of belonging. With the understanding that they are part of something bigger and not just for themselves. Who raised them to see the collective and to act for it. With the clear knowledge that defending our land, our shared home, is a necessity and not a luxury. With the knowledge that their sons might be harmed and sacrifice themselves.

These days mark 13 years since that war... Today is the 9th of Av, a day of remembrance for the destruction caused by baseless hatred. Only love will win. Love will build what hatred destroys.

Let us together remember those who risked their lives for us, even though they didn’t know me or you. That is baseless love.

They knew the country and defended the home.
